It takes twenty minutes by car from Fukushima Station to Azuma Orchard. It is located along the “Fruits Line,” a road where many orchards are lined up. Peaches, which is a special product of Fukushima, along with cherries, pears, grapes and apples, are cultivated at this orchard.
Peach picking tours are especially popular in the area, and its season is from early June to early July. Participants can enjoy the all-you-can-eat, thirty minute tour for 800 yen (adults) and 600 yen (elementary school children or under). You can eat peaches to your heart’s content.
Those who prefer a firm texture in peaches should pick the fruits on the trees. Do not twist, but pull the peaches straight down. Be sure to hold the branches for support.
The orchard also has some peaches already picked on the day before, for those who prefer a ripe fruit.
Azuma Orchard pays extra attention to the soil. Tree leaves are mixed into the compost before fermentation. The orchard also pays attention to the trimming of branches, and makes sure that the healthy branches are mixed with the frail branches, so that good-tasting peaches can be cultivated.
The orchard shop sells soft-serve ice creams mixed with seasonal fruits such as peach, cherry and grape, along with the regular vanilla flavor. Souvenir fruits can also be purchased at the shop.
Azuma Orchard strives to satisfy the visitors, rather than winning a prize in a competition. All the fruits at the orchard are cultivated from this creed, so if you have the chance, make a visit and taste them.
