Katsunuma in Yamanashi prefecture is where you will find the original sightseeing farm which started it all 50 years ago – Kohakuen. At present, they cultivate some 20 different varieties of grapes, and have a long picking season lasting from the end of July straight through around mid-November. Their grapes are cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizers; only agricultural chemicals are employed in the production of their fruits.
Through conscious effort, the entire farm has been made as barrier-free as possible; the bathrooms, parking areas, vineyard, and shop all have had any differences in level adapted so that those with baby strollers or wheelchairs can easily move about at this farm. Plus, the grape vines has been lowered than their standard height, which means that those in wheelchairs can easily harvest grapes from their chair instead. Those who are not in wheelchairs but may have some difficulty standing for long periods of time need not worry either – stools have been prepared for use here as well.
The all-you-can-eat grape picking course lasts for one hour. Starting with the grapes with the earliest season, Delawares, in July, from the end September to the start of November you can pick Koushu grapes or any of 20 other varieties depending on when you visit.
Being able to slowly enjoy a meal is another of the great points of visiting Kohakuen. We recommend taking part in their leisurely barbecue course, and tasting their take on Yamanashi prefecture’s popular regional dish, houtou.
Another great point of this farm is their gift shop; here you will find many products that have been carefully prepared, including original juices, jams, wines, famous Yamanashi sweets, grapes and even homemade Kyoho grape jam.
For individuals, reservations are not needed when grape picking. The vineyard is covered too, so even on rainy days it’s possible to visit and freely enjoyed this course.
